About Five Chapters

FiveChapters, one of the pioneer online literary journals, has published a new short story every week since October 2006. A new story begins every Monday, serial-style, with a new installment on each weekday.
FiveChapters authors have won the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, the PEN/Faulkner and many other top literary prizes. Stories published on the site have been recognized by several editions of Best American stories and won special recognition from the Pushcart Prizes.
FiveChapters Books published the debut story collection by Emma Straub and the second collection by Jess Row, both in February 2011. In 2013, FC Books will publish debut collections by Nina McConigley and Ian Stansel.
The editor of FiveChapters is David Daley. David is the executive editor of Salon. He curated the 20-Minute Fiction in issue 12 of McSweeney’s, created the Tag-team Fiction series for The Journal News, and is the former features editor of Details magazine and the former lifestyles manager of the Louisville Courier-Journal.

Please understand, however, that FiveChapters is a one-person operation, and that all submissions cannot be individually acknowledged.

Mary Costello Featured Reader & Judge at Fifth Annual Over The Edge Fiction Slam

After the event’s huge success in the past four years, Over The Edge presents its fifth annual fiction slam with Featured Reader, Mary Costello, at The Kitchen @ The Museum, Spanish Arch, Galway on Friday, October 11^th, 8pm.

Mary Costello is originally from East Galway and now lives in Dublin. Her stories have been widely anthologised and published in New Irish Writing and in The Stinging Fly. Her debut short story collection, The China Factory, was published last year by The Stinging Fly press and has received a very warm critical response internationally. Long-listed for the Guardian First Book Award, The China Factory has been described by The Sunday Independent as “twelve perfect stories.” Mary Costello is a rising Irish literary star.

Poetry slams have provided many emerging poets with an important platform over the past decade, but now it’s the fiction writers’ turn. The first twelve fiction writers to make it to The Kitchen @ The Museum on the evening of Friday, October 11^th and register will be guaranteed a place in the slam. All participating writers should bring two pieces of their own fiction, as there are two rounds. The time limit in both rounds is five minutes. Extracts from longer stories are admissible. Stories do not have to be memorised. The Fiction Slam will be judged by a three person jury made up of two audience members and Mary Costello. Three writers will go through to the second round and the prize for the winner is a bottle of wine.

Short Story Publishing Information Day .Irish Writers Centre

What makes a successful short story? Does it boil down to luck, persistence, talent or a combination of all three?

Mike McCormack and Dave Lordan join us on November 2nd to share their experiences writing and publishing short stories at the Irish Writers' Centre's Short Story Publishing Information Day .

The day also features Lisa Frank and John Walsh from Doire Press, who will give you an insight into how to approach a publisher, what they are looking for, and tips in formatting your collection.

This is followed by Jennifer Matthews from The Long Short Story, who will talk about publishing and promoting your work online. Finally Seán Carabini will then talk about the James Plunkett Short Story Awards with an insight into the judging process and what makes a good competition story.

The publishing day will take place on Saturday, November 2nd, from 10.30-16.30. Tickets ARE €60 (€50 for members) and can be booked by paying online or by ringing (01) 872 1302.

Boyne Writers Group, Trim, are marking All-Ireland Poetry Day on Thursday 3 October  by holding a series of short readings celebrating the poetic heritage of Meath at places associated with well-known Meath poets. Two of the poets are Meath-born and two others spent many years in the county. At each venue there will be readings from the works of the featured poets.

People are invited to attend at any or all of the venues, to listen to the poetry, to join in by reading their own favourite poems either by the featured poets or by any other poet irrespective of county or country of origin.

Migrant Writers and Performing Artists Ireland will showcase a night of multi-cultural poetry readings. This entertaining event will also feature an interlude of classical music and a scintillating Georgian dance group. The night will feature work by writers:

• Dr. Theophilus Ejorh, creative writer, journalist, sociologist, activist and founder of Migrant Writers and Perfoming Artists Ireland;
• Dr. Kate Antosik Parsons, visual artist, writer and art historian, originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, USA;
• Nita Mishra, poet and currently studying for a PhD at University College Cork; 
• Ziad Salih, Iraqi born poet and writer living in Dublin;
• Kunle Animashaun, writer, poet and dramatist;
• Usha Maharani, Malaysian of Indian ancestry, Usha speaks and writes in three different languages – English, Tamil and Malay;
• Nicy Kasa, born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and living in Ireland for the past seven years, Nicy is the writer of the award-winning poem,"Where I Come From", upon which the three-minute short documentary film by Luke Morgan is based.

Would you like to build up confidence in reading your poems aloud onstage? Are you looking for advice and tips on how to improve? This workshop is not about strictly performance poetry and or reciting poems; it’s about poetry in performance, for an audience.

As well established poets and performers of their own poetry, The Poetry Divas will focus in this workshop on the art of performing poetry for others. They will discuss rhythm, emphasis, dramatic pause, timing, movement, flair and nerves. After polishing your performance skills, the workshop will culminate in a performance to put them into practise in front of an audience.

Please bring along a few poems which you would like to work on, or poems by another poet which you would like to perform.
